Process Art – Creating Smear Painting Masterpieces

This is a very fun and creative project.  It allows the art to just happen. Children can enjoy the process of watching the colors run together and create patterns and eventually a beautiful work of art.

The Materials:

  • Heavy Paper (colored cardstock or poster board works best)
  • Acrylic or Homemade Paints

The Process:

This is a favorite painting technique as it produces a really beautiful picture with a simple procedure. Even though our focus is the process, the result is impressive in this technique. For this picture, choosing a colored piece of cardstock will work best. The color of the cardstock will add to the picture in areas where the paint does not fully cover the paper. The cardstock or poster board will work to make the surface more stable when it is saturated with paint and then needs to be picked up.

Next, have the child select multiple colors for this picture. More colors provide a more interesting effect. Next, squeeze drops of paint over the surface. Smaller dots of paint work best to provide a greater impact as the colors run together.

After the paper is filled with paint drops, have the child gently hold up the paper and let the paint start to run. Then show her how to turn the paper so that it runs a different direction. The objective is to have the colors smear over the entire paper in different directions.

Enjoy the process and a masterpiece perfect for framing!
