Process Art – Making Your Own Puffy Paint

Today I’m going to share my most basic recipe for puffy paint. It is fun and easy and allows children to experience creating colors and textures.  The book also includes a microwave puffy paint which adds more drama and dimensions but requires adult help using a microwave for the full effect.  I’ve chosen to share the simple and completely “I can do it myself” friendly method here.

Homemade Puffy Paint

The Materials:

  • 1 ½ Cup of Water
  • 1 Cup of Flour
  • 1 Cup of Salt
  • Food Colors
  • Bowls (one for each color)
  • Spoons (for mixing; one spoon for each color)
  • Paint Brushes or Squeeze Bottles (one for each color)
  • Cardstock, Poster Board, Construction Paper, Watercolor Paper (or other surfaces to paint)

The Process:

Mix together the flour and salt with a fork or whisk. Next add water and stir. As always, if possible allow the child to join in the process of creating the paint. Divide the paint into the bowls. Drop a different food color into each bowl and stir to combine; add more color if a darker color is desired. Extending the activity into color mixing can be a fun and valuable lesson when creating this paint.
