I’m going to share some variations on creating your own water colors. This will extend from the last post to create even more options. These variations enhance the experience and allow even more options for children to create their own masterpieces.
Drink Mix Water Colors
You can use powdered drink mixes such as Kool-Aid to create homemade water colors. Choose drink mixes based on the color they will make. Just follow the instructions for homemade water colors (on the prior post), but use the powdered drink mix instead of food coloring. It’s fun, makes beautiful colors, and it smells wonderful. This is a great addition to the sensory approach.
Homemade Pastel Colors
These are a favorite. There are several thicknesses and differences based on the type of milk base used. They all create beautiful pastel water colors. Its fun to try all of them as you enjoy painting over and over again.
The Materials:
- Small Bowls
- Milk, Condensed Milk, Whipping Cream, or Buttermilk
- Food Colors
- Spoons (for mixing color; one spoon for each color)
- Paint Brushes
- Cardstock, Poster Board, Construction Paper, Watercolor Paper (or other surfaces to paint)
The Process:
Follow the instructions for homemade water colors; simply substitute the milk of choice for the water. The different types of milk will each present a different result. They each create a beautiful soft pastel like effect. Experiment with the different forms and enjoy the process.
