This post is a continuation with more examples of different ways to make creative and colorful bases. For the full instructions, see the prior post.
For a very different look in coloring your sensory foundation materials, I love using rice and grits with minimal coloring to create a mottled look.
When coloring rice with food coloring, you can get interesting results by limiting the amount of food coloring rather than fully saturating the rice. This method allows for several shades to surface in the final product.
You can create a confetti rice look such as the example shown here by using only a few drops and limiting the amount of squeezing the bag. Because the rice is very dry and absorbs the liquid color quickly, you can include several colors to create a fun multicolored confetti appearance. This is one of my very favorites! I love all the colors.
Grits are another one of my favorite bases. Using grits is another example of a food based product that creates really interesting results. Grits soak up color similar to rice; however, because the texture is very fine it resembles colored sand. This makes a very good base for sensory activities.
The grits, as with most of the dry products, will store well in the sealed container for later use. This created material would also work well in sand art creations. It is inexpensive and can easily replace commercially purchased art sand.
