Practical Life Lessons – Peeling Hard Boiled Eggs

After the children have packaged the eggs and are ready for a new activity, you can use the same eggs for the next activity.  Hard boil the eggs and let them cool. Then complete a presentation that shows the children how to peel the eggs.

Materials Needed

  • Hard Boiled Eggs (Cooled)
  • A Small Bowl Filled with Water
  • A Small Bowl for Egg Shells
  • A Kitchen Towel
  • A Display Tray

Presentation and Activity:

Begin the presentation by gently tapping the egg on the table. Tap the egg until it is well cracked on all sides. Next begin to gently peel back the egg shell. Gently peel the egg shell off. The water can be used to help remove small pieces of shell that stick to your fingers and the towel should be used to dry your fingers after using the water. (Note that eggs that have been stored in the refrigerator for a week or more, but are still within the packaging use by date, are best for peeling. Very fresh eggs do not peel easily and will make the activity difficult.)

After completing this activity, the child can proceed to a snack of eating the boiled egg. This snack could be combined with the next activity in the book which involves slicing the egg. Other suggestions for using the eggs that are peeled include making egg salad or chopping the boiled egg with a blunt knife and seasoning it with a little salt.

You can find many more activities in the book which is available at Amazon.com. Direct links to all of the books are on the page labeled “Dr. Andrea’s Books.”
